HIGH SCHOOL TRAP TEAMS

The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League has emerged as the fastest-growing extracurricular activity for high school students in the United States since its launch in 2008. This remarkable growth reflects strong community and school support, making clay target shooting a popular choice among young athletes. The league prioritizes three core values: safety, fun, and marksmanship.

Various competitions offered include trap shooting, skeet shooting, sporting clays, and 5-Stand. Inclusivity is a hallmark of the league, as it promotes co-ed teams, allowing male and female athletes to compete together. It also serves as an adaptive sport, providing opportunities for students with physical disabilities to participate and achieve success in the sport.

The Watertown Rod and Gun Club plays a vital role in this initiative by hosting five local high school clay target teams. Schools represented include Holy Family Catholic, Mayer Lutheran, Waconia, Watertown-Mayer, and Chanhassen-Chaska. This partnership highlights the club’s dedication to youth development and its commitment to advancing the sport of clay target shooting within the community.

CLUB HISTORY

The Watertown Gun Club was established in 1955. The original club house was a World War II surplus Quonset hut, which is an all-purpose half-circle galvanized steel building. In 1953, the club moved to its current location on the southwest side of Watertown. The clubhouse was added in 1990 through the generosity of local community members.
